Guilmon is awesome, a great mix between cool and cute, especially with his debut in Tamers. Megidramon is one of my favorite Dragon Digimon in the entire franchise, I love the design for having one of the more unique appearances among his peers along with the destructive feeling he gives off. But Guilmon could tank a Diamond Storm from Renamon that can one shot Armors and Champions like Lynxmon and Fugamon. I was just wondering what level I should evolve guilmon and how evolving non-partner digimon work in the game, i know you need to use an item but not sure beyond that. Any advice appreciated.

It's just residual data of Megidramon. You see his eyes glowing red, meaning that Megidramon took the control for this short period of time. It was just a reflex, and that's how Digimon are, they adapt to protect their partner. And it's confirmed in the remaining scene, Guilmon wants to fight for Takato, and with Takato.
