Ghana Water Ltd. was established on 1st July 1999 following the conversion of Ghana Water and Sewerage Corporation into a state-owned limited liability company under the Statutory Corporations (Conversion to Companies) Act 461 of 1993 as amended by LI 1648.

Ghana Water Ltd. (GWL) is the sole government owned water utility company. It is responsible for the production, transmission and distribution of water in urban areas in Ghana. As of June 2024, the company manages and operates eighty-four (84) water systems comprising sixty-one (61) surface water systems and twenty-three (23) ground water systems.
