The Heckler & Koch HK33 is a 5.56mm assault rifle developed in the 1960s by West German armament manufacturer Heckler & Koch GmbH (H&K), primarily for export.

Heckler & Koch developed the HK33 assault rifle from the 7.62 x 51 mm G3 rifle. The weapon is similar in appearance to the G3, but fires the smaller 5.56 x 45 mm cartridge. It is actually an updated version of the civilian HK43 Rifle (which was the semi auto sporting rifle variant of the HK33 imported 1974). It differs from the select fire HK33 by way of a metal trigger pack, no push pin assembly and no paddle release as well as the single "0" and "1" fire select settings (indicating it is a Semi Auto only rifle).

Like its older brother, the G3, the HK33 comes in various configurations. It's believed that the Regiment uses/has used the HK33KA3 carbine variant for close protection (body guarding) duties, usually keeping the rifle in the vehicles. [1] The HK33KA3 features a retractable stock and a shorter barrel than the full-sized version.

One of the unique variants of the HK 33 was the HK 53 sub machine gun. It was the first 5.56mm sub machine gun to be widely adopted by law enforcement units. The HK 33 is a derivative of the G3 rifle firing the 5.56x45mm round. Besides the different caliber the HK 33 is virtually identical in design to the G3.

The HK33 was superseded briefly in the HK catalog by the similar but different G41. With the advent of the polymer-framed G36 in 1997, the HK33 died a natural death. Nowadays semiauto 5.56mm versions of the HK33 are available from producers both foreign and domestic.
