HMS K17 was a British K class submarine built by Vickers in Barrow-in-Furness. Like all British K-class submarines, the submarine had a displacement of 1,980 long tons (2,010 t) when at the surface and 2,566 long tons (2,607 t) while submerged. [1] .

HMS K 17 (Lt Cdr H J Hearn) was lost on 31 January 1918, in what has become infamous as the Battle of May Island . The vessels involved were HMS FEARLESS (cruiser), HMS K4, K3, K6, K7, K12 and K17.

The second group of K-boats, the 12 th Flotilla, were now approaching May Island following HMS Fearless and other battle cruisers heading down the Firth. At 8.32pm, Fearless slammed into K17 which sank within minutes, although the crew managed to escape into the water.

The two flotillas were the 12th Submarine Flotilla, consisting of K3, K4, K6 and K7, led by Captain Charles Little in the light cruiser HMS Fearless, and the 13th Submarine Flotilla, consisting of K11, K12, K14, K17 and K22, led by Commander Ernest William Leir in the destroyer HMS Ithuriel. [3]

K17 sank following a collision with HMS Fearless, the light cruiser leading the 12th (K) Flotilla. She was struck on the starboard side, a large hole being torn out of her side at the forward end of the wardroom; a delay of eight minutes is recorded being collision and sinking.
