HMS Naiad was a Dido-class light cruiser of the Royal Navy which served in the Second World War. She was sunk in action on 11 March 1942 south of Crete in the Mediterranean Sea.

DIDO-Class cruiser ordered from R&W Hawthorn, Leslie & Co. Ltd., Newcastle on 21st March 1937 under the 1936 Programme. The ship was laid down on 26th August 1937 and launched on 3rd February 1939 as the 3rd RN ship to carry this name. Introduced in 1797 for a 5th Rate it had last been in use in 1890 for cruiser, sold in 1922.

Guy Grantham, DSO, RN) was sunk in the Eastern Mediterranean, north of Sidi Barrrani, Egypt in position 32°01'N, 26°20'E by one torpedo from the German submarine U-565. 82 members of her crew went down with the ship, there were 582 survivors. Hit by U-boat Sunk on 11 Mar 1942 by U-565 (Jebsen).

At approximately 20:00hrs on 11 March, Naiad, bearing the flag of Rear Admiral Vian and commanded by Capt G. Grantham, DSO, was hit by one torpedo on her starboard side amidships from German U-Boat 565 and sank in 35-minutes, just north of Sidi Barrani, Egypt. HMS Jervis rescued the ship’s company survivors, including Admiral Vian.
