During Bombardier Inc.'s short stint in manufacturing locomotives for freight service it unveiled the HR616, a model that was based from its former subsidiary's designs, the Montreal Locomotive Works. The new locomotive sported a unique carbody known as the "Draper Taper" that was intended to improve a crews' visibility when looking aft.

The HR616 was a 3,000 horse Alco built in 1982 and the CN got 20 of them numbered 2100–2119. These motors were some of the 1st CN designed “Draper Taper” cowl car bodies. Also the 2119 was the first unit to feature a desktop style control stand.

Jun 27, 2014 · CN 2105 was a locomotive of particularly rare vintage. It turns out, this was a Bombardier HR616 unit (six axles, 16 cylinders, 3,000 horsepower). Finding information on this cowl unit was tough, since its number now belongs to a C40-8W. To makes things tougher, I had no idea this was a Bombardier unit. I assumed it was an EMD model.

Bombardier was the successor to MLW's locomotive production in Canada, their HR line stood for High Reliability (the locomotives were apparenetly pretty much the opposite) and the 616 stood for 6 axle 16 cylinder. While the name on the outside might have said Bombardier the heart of the loco was still a good old Alco 251E.

In 1983, Bombardier made one last all-out effort to return CP to the fold and demonstrated their latest six-axle offering, the HR616. Borrowing four that had already been delivered to CN, they applied Bombardier logos to the sides of the nose, and removed the CN logo.
