A number of models based on the VN Holden Commodore were developed by HSV, the most potent of which was the Commodore SS Group A SV built for Holden’s sporting homologation requirements.

The HSV VN Series was launched in August 1988 with a completely new body design and engines. The standard engine was a V6 with fuel injection, while the standard V8 engine also featured fuel injection. Models within the range included the HSV SV89, which featured a 180kW engine, and the HSV VN SS Group A SV with a whopping 215kW of power.
