Hardy's work is the subject of a new retrospective which opens today — February 23, 2024 — and runs until June 2 at The Photographers’ Gallery, London W1.

Bert Hardy (1913-1995) is a name synonymous with mid-century British photography. He is best known for capturing British life in the immediate post-war era. However, his photography extends to a much broader timeframe to share the essence of a changing world, from the interwar years to the start of the Swinging Sixties.

During the Second World War, Hardy served as a sergeant in the Army Film and Photographic Unity, photographing life on the Homefront as well as the war overseas. Hardy photographed many of the most consequential events of the war’s final months: the battle for Normandy, the Liberation of Paris, the invasion of Germany and the crossing of the Rhine.
