The Liber chronicarum, a universal history compiled from older and contemporary sources by the Nuremberg doctor, humanist, and bibliophile Hartmann Schedel (1440--1514), is one of the most densely illustrated and technically advanced works of early printing.

The Liber Chronicarum, more commonly known as the Nuremberg Chronicle, was the most profusely illustrated book of the 15th century.

The library of Hartmann Schedel, physician and author of the Nuremberg Chronicle, was unequalled in fifteenth-century Germany. Schedel was interested in virtually all areas of knowledge of the late Middle Ages: rhetoric, astronomy, philosophy, classical and humanist literature, historiography, geography and cosmography, medicine, law, and theology.

The thoughtful, conservative, and rigidly orthodox Schedel does not often express his own opinion. The book owes its popularity in part to the great number of fine wood-cuts executed by the two artists, Michael Wolgemuth and William Pleydenwurff.

The medical doctor and humanist Hartmann Schedel (1440-1514), grew up in Nuremberg and first studied liberal art in Leipzig. In 1463 he went to Padua together with the humanist Petrus Luder, to study medicine, Italian, Greek and Hebrew.

In 1482 Schedel was elected to the Great Council of Nuremberg as an outstanding scientist. He died in 1514. Schedel was a famous erudite and a collector of humanist and ancient literature.
