In 1908, Harton Coal Company opened a ground breaking electric railway network (Harton Electric Railway) to transport coal from Westhoe, Harton and other local collieries. The colliery closed on the 25th of July, 1969, with the loss of about a thousand jobs.

Harton Pit, the site of the pendulum experiments detailed in the Lecture, is within two miles of South Shields, in a S.S.W. direction. It is the property of Messrs. Blackett, Anderson, Wood, & Philipson, whose liberal conduct in this matter has been so justly praised by Professor Airy.

Harton Pit is 1260 feet deep; its mode of ascent and' descent is by "cage and tub;" which Is made in either way, with the smoothness of a railway carriage, in less than two minutes. The extensive nature of this pit may be judged of by the amount of passages which it contains in its workings, in connection with its other shaft, St. Hilda.
