Originally called the He 180, [1] the Heinkel He 280 was an early turbojet-powered fighter aircraft designed and produced by the German aircraft manufacturer Heinkel. It was the first jet fighter to fly in the world.

The Heinkel He 280 was the first turbojet-powered fighter aircraft in the world. It was inspired by Ernst Heinkel's emphasis on research into high-speed flight and built on the company's experience with the He 178 jet prototype.

The He 280 project was born in late 1939 as "He 180", led by a certain Robert Lusser. A selection of HeS 8-Series turbojets (1,543 pounds of thrust) powers the new form. The aircraft features a streamlined fuselage, this time with a covered nose cone.
