HMM-161 returned to combat in 1990, serving throughout Operation Desert Shield/Storm. HMM-161 deployed several times to Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom. 2009 saw the final deployment of the squadron as a helicopter squadron; HMM-161 returned home to begin transitioning to the MV-22B "Osprey".
