"Different drilling conditions make it impossible to develop any rigid rules for feeds and speeds." The following tables contain guidelines which can be utilized when drilling standard materials. Also, the following “rules of thumb” can be used to determine proper feeds and speeds for drilling ferrous materials.
Adjust the cutting speed and/or feed rate based on your cutting conditions. NOTE: All speed conditions are for stable conditions. For unstable conditions, it is suggested to reduce starting speeds by 10%. For interrupted cuts, reduce by 20%. For 4 X D, it is highly recommended to start with feed and speed values reduced by 10% less than above data.
Speeds and Feeds Calculator (Milling, Turning, Drilling)
Hardness has a significant influence on Speeds and feeds, and setting the correct hardness increases the accuracy of the results! This screen has different fields depending on the leading application you chose in the initial screen. For all applications, you can set the Machine’s maximum RPM and Power limits.
NOTE: Speeds and Feeds listed are estimated and will vary by application. These tools can be found on pages 293-317.
Example: Calculate the speed and feed for a 1⁄4′′ HSS drill bit in soft cast iron on a manual milling machine in the lab. Note that these speed and feed values are guidelines assuming adequate (flooded) lubrication, workpiece stiffness and drill depth less than 3 drill diameters (0.75′′).
