Milking Scotch Highland Cows? - Homesteading Forum
2012年12月16日 · A friend of mine who raised Scottish Highlands had one that he threatened to bring over to me when I was still milking for a living. He had a cow that had really bagged up when she freshened. And a neighbor with Black Angus has also had a cow with a noticeably large udder when she came in. So I say go for it. Any cow will give a decent amount ...
Dexter or highland - The Goat Spot Forum
2013年2月3日 · Honestly in your scenario I would go Highland. You can train any breed of cattle to be milked. All it takes is frequent exposure and calm nature. I think you'd be quite happy with them. Their temperament is wonderful, and mature I would expect a highland cow at 900-1100#.
Dexter vs. Scottish Highland? - Homesteading Forum
2012年8月21日 · Also, you're going to have difficulty finding a Highland cow that has been milked, and if you're going for a heifer, bear in mind that the Highland calves and heifers can take longer to breed and therefore be in the position to give milk earlier than the Dexter breed. Not all Dexters are created equal.
Highland vs AngusX beef - Homesteading Forum
2011年4月18日 · Highlands are a very interesting looking cow. Seems a bred cow if it is young enough may be an opportunity to have beef in the future. I hear the hiland beef is very good when properly done. You would have to get it bred in the future some how, if you went with the cow. I would say buy both if you can swing it.
Fiber from Highland Cattle? - Homesteading Forum
2007年6月28日 · My wife is a spinner and she says she wouldn't touch Highland hair for love or money. The undercoat is soft, but short and mixed with the longer, coarse outercoat. It would take a lot of carding and mixing, I just can't see that it would be worth the bother.

The jersey could add some better milking qualities to make a great well rounded northwoods family cow. I don't need as much beef as a full highland or as much milk as a full jersey.

How much acreage to sustain a Dexter or Highland?
2008年4月24日 · No idea how much acreage to produce hay. I have 2 1/4 acres, so just shy of 2 acres that I keep 3 Highlands on. Cow, yearling, calf most of the time. This year the three of them have been consuming on average 50 lbs of hay per day. That is 2/3 to 3/4 of a bale of local hay. The rest goes to the goats.
