2006年8月1日 · We present a brief summary of the evolution of ideas in historical biogeography since its beginnings over two centuries ago. Also, we introduce the basic concepts of each of nine historical biogeographic approaches.

Historical biogeography is the study of animal distributions emphasiszing evolution and over evolutionary time scales, and using a combination of phylogenetic and distributional information.

For most of its history, biogeography has been divided into proponents of vicariance explanations, who defend that distribution patterns can mainly be explained by geological, tectonic-isolating events; and dis-persalists, who argue that current distribution patterns are largely the result of recent migration events.
