Historically, Boothbay Harbor, along with its neighbors, has been known for its shipbuilding in the 19th and early 20th centuries. The late former Congressman Stanley Tupper was born here in 1921. A Republican, he became an independent spokesman for environmental and other progressive issues.

The Boothbay Region Historical Society, founded in 1967, is located at the 1874 Elizabeth F. Reed house, Fullerton Park. Many of the furnishings in the building are Reed family heirlooms. The Society represents Boothbay and Boothbay Harbor and siplays local historical mementos and houses documentary collections.
