These are from SHOT Show range day 2004. They are still not final production, but are beginning to take on the characteristic look.

Nov 13, 2015 · Seriously though, it was original designated as the "HKM4", but Colt sued HK, stating that they owned the rights to the name "M4". So, HK changed the name to more appropriately merge "M4" and "M16". Later, other companies, like DD, used the "M4" name and got away with it.
