Honouliuli National Historic Site is near Waipahu on the island of Oahu, in the U.S. state of Hawaii. This is the site of the Honouliuli Internment Camp which was Hawaiʻi's largest and longest-operating internment camp, opened in 1943 and closed in 1946. 2025年3月19日 · Honouliuli was established first as a national monument in 2015, and then a national historic site in 2019. In 1943, it opened as a 160-acre incarceration site run by the U.S. Army and was once the largest and longest-used confinement site in Hawaiʻi for U.S. civilians, including Japanese Americans, and prisoners of war.

2011年10月31日 · The Honouliuli camp, located in a gulch cutting through agricultural land of Central Oʻahu, was the largest and longest operating. Dubbed “Hell Canyon” by some inhabitants, the 120-acre site opened in March 1943 after Sand Island facilities were deemed too exposed.

On March 12th, 2019, the monument was redesignated and officially became the Honouliuli National Historic Site. In March 2021, the National Park Service appointed its first superintendent, Hanako Wakatsuki, to the site. 2025年3月10日 · Honouliuli National Historic Site is the location of the largest and longest-run incarceration and internment site on the Hawaiian Islands during WWII. The camp itself was 160 acres, but the park service maintains and preserves 123 of those acres.

Honouliuli, which roughly translates to Blue Harbor or Dark Bay, is the largest ahupua’a on Oahu and represents an expansive leeward portion of west Oahu. In 1848 the ahupua’a of Honouliuli was allocated to the granddaughter and great niece of King Kamehameha I during the Māhele ‘Āina (division of lands).
