It's the exact same with a sword; it doesn't just turn into a club. The pommel doesn't do as much balancing as you think either. Most of it comes from the blade's taper.

Although there are numerous strikes with the pommel while the sword is sheathed and occasionally with both hands on the hilt, I've never seen somebody completely reverse the sword and grip the blade with both hands. Against very heavily armored targets it was not uncommon to hold the sword upside-down and bash people over the head with the crossguard or pommel. Doesn't work with curved swords commonly seen in Asia, however, as you can't get a secure grip with such a weapon.
