Pay close attention to exactly where your feet are supposed to be on each count. The male steps are shown on the left side. The female steps (which are exactly opposite) are on the right. Men lead with their LEFT foot. On the “ONE” count, start by moving the LEFT foot forward, as shown in the following drawing. Women lead with their RIGHT foot.

Shag Dance is a dance style that originated in Southern United States in the 1930s. It emphasizes unique posture, footwork, and notion of lead-follow dynamics, with different basic steps and advanced moves such as the Pivot Turn and Tuck Turn.

The Basic Shag Steps. The basic step is counted "One-And-Two, Three-And-Four, Five-Six". Each word corresponds to a step movement (eight words = eight steps). You never move the same foot twice in a row. Every time you move, you do so with a different foot.
