From as early as the 16th century there had been a market near the water in Hull. But it was at the dawn of the 19th century that Hull’s fruit trade really took off. Its proximity to the water made the Humber Dock area just as attractive a destination then as it is now.

Hull’s Fruit Market, adjacent to the Humber Dock, has been central to Hull’s history since the 16th century. Its significance peaked during the 19th century due to the trade of fruit and vegetables. Fruit and vegetables fresh off ships berthed in the city’s docks would be traded, packed, and sent for distribution around the country.

From a £24 million residential development to the existing success of Humber Street, the Hull Fruit Market scheme has become a creative, cultural quarter of the city. Hull’s many regeneration projects have been improving its public realm and the perceptions of the city over the years.
