Beginning in mid-1944, M4A3 models of the Sherman adopted a newly developed Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension (HVSS). [5] The HVSS system of an Israeli M51 Super Sherman tank. This type of a suspension system involved springing the pair of dual-mounted road wheels on each bogie against each other with a volute spring.

Israel became the largest post-war user of Sherman tanks, conducting extensive modifications to keep them in frontline service right up into the early 1970s as tanks, mobile artillery pieces, armored ambulances and many more versions. Many saw action in the 1967 Six-Day War and 1973 October War.

The HVSS suspension made it onto a lot of things built on the Sherman chassis as well. HVSS was also retrofitted onto older small hatch hulls used in Israel’s M50 and M51 Sherman tanks. The interchangeable suspension, even to older models surely prolonged the tanks life, and there’s a Canadian heavy equipment company still manufacturing ...

An M4A3 76w HVSS tank supporting some doughs, probably in Germany in early 1945. The tank has an impressive amount of stuff strapped to the back. This up-armored Sherman took a beating, and was shipped back to the states and is on display at Rock Island Arsenal, though the history of the tank is a mystery.

The Medium Tank M4A3(76)W HVSS was the first production version of the Sherman to use a Horizontal Volute Spring Suspension system, which improved both the ground pressure of the tank and made the suspension more reliable.
