In North Carolina, US 1 runs along I-85 through Henderson. It then proceeds toward Raleigh becoming Capital Blvd. It then latches on to the I-440 Beltline around the western side of Raleigh and continues as a freeway south of Raleigh through Cary. It is a freeway south of Cary though Sanford and to Southern Pines.

Planning and development are underway to improve safety and ease traffic congestion along U.S. 15-501, U.S. 1, and N.C. 5 in Moore County. Proposed improvements will include the addition of a raised median and limiting left turns in most areas.

A closer look from a geographic standpoint: South Carolina to Sanford: US 1 appears not to made any changes from the South Carolina line to Pine Bluff.
