It's a meme, the joke being that plenty of us have had that thought, tried, and had it blow up in our face. You can't fix people. You can support them, but you can't fix them. They have to do that themselves.

Considering everything we've been told by the devs so far, I would bet that it is possible to romance him and keep him in your party to the end IF you play your cards right. Personally though, I'm not expecting to be able to "fix him"; I really don't see his allignment changing any further than neutral, if that.

I hate him and I want to bring him to justice for the killings. And I want to know the whole story of what happened in 1477. I don't want to play as him. I want him to be a villain so I can defeat him. At this point I have no reason to hate Gortash or Ketheric Thorm, but this guy – I want to end him. That was a perfect villain setup.

I talked to him about everything, and he'd promise again and again that he was just going through a rough patch, and that soon he'd be back on his feet and be the person I'd fallen for. So my "I can fix him" was more "if I'm patient, understanding, and nurturing, then he'll be who he promises." Welp. So I learned what love-bombing was.
