Some AAC learners rely on preprogrammed sentences or phrases such as “I want” and “I see”. With core words, they can choose from a small set of words to create their own sentences.

Some of her word selection was assisted no doubt by motor memory in knowing which words were on a screen like we know how to drive home without giving it much thought. As she expanded her use of her talker, her functional vision was increasing too.

Books help students learn functional vocabulary about their home, school, and community. They also help students make and reinforce connections about topics presented in class. Literature also help students increase their background knowledge. Additionally, many students who do not use AAC benefit from adapted books.
