Interstate 278 (I-278) is an auxiliary Interstate Highway in New Jersey and New York in the United States. The road runs 35.62 miles (57.32 km) from US Route 1/9 (US 1/9) in Linden, New Jersey, northeast to the Bruckner Interchange in the New York City borough of the Bronx.

Interstate 278 begins in an industrial area between Linden and Elizabeth at a partially built interchange with U.S. 1/9. The freeway spurs east to the New Jersey Turnpike and Goethals Bridge approach to Staten Island, New York. Interstate 278 enters all of New York City’s boroughs: Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, and Bronx.

2025年2月5日 · I-278 is composed of the Staten Island Expressway, Gowanes Expressway, Brooklyn-Queens Expressway, Grand Central Parkway, and most of the Bruckner Expressway. While it is more of a north-south freeway, it is signed east-west, and is the only road to enter all five boroughs of New York City.

The New York section of I-278 begins at the Goethals Bridge at the New York-New Jersey state line. The first section is the Staten Island Expressway, which crosses Staten Island. At the end of the Staten Island Expressway, I-278 goes over the Verrazano Bridge to Brooklyn, where it becomes the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway.

Constructed between 1925 and 1928, the narrow Goethals Bridge spans the Arthur Kill River between Linden, New Jersey and Staten Island, New York. Measuring 8,600 feet in length, the steel-truss cantilever bridge travels 135 feet above the river below at mid-span.

Interstate 278 is a belt highway designed to relieve I-78 of traffic bound for the Union County communities, Linden, Elizabeth and New York City. It branches southward from I-78 in Springfield Township, crosses the Goethals Bridge into Staten Island and the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge into Brooklyn, then extends northeast to I-95 in the Bronx.
