2023年1月10日 · Gaps is a part of i3 now. Also, it's not usually recommended to only follow video guides, especially if they are more than a few months old. While they usually do have useful information, pieces of it can be outdated which can lead to issues.

smart_gaps inverse_outer was recently added in i3-gaps-next which has the exact opposite behavior: gaps when 1 container, no gaps when more. I quite like that actually, that’s pretty much exactly what I used to do manually by toggling gaps.

2019年7月3日 · I've had good results from using i3-gnome with i3-gaps and a fresh pop_os install. I was able to get the best of both worlds, keeping all the gnome settings and such. You will lose out on gnome extensions, so that means you'll have to setup your own lockscreen, etc.

The latest beta versions of i3-gaps actually contain a few functionality improvements over i3 - namely vertical/horizontal gaps. Unlike the normal gaps, these vertical/horizontal only gaps can help you do things like centering a window on the screen without having to make it floating.

The original i3 doesn't support gaps, so when you install it make sure you search for and install i3-gaps, not i3 because it looks like the gaps are important to you. I personally think they're a bit overrated. I also encourage you to give Sway a shot.
