IC 2602 (also known as the Southern Pleiades, Theta Carinae Cluster, or Caldwell 102) [4] is an open cluster in the constellation Carina. Discovered by Abbe Lacaille in 1751 from South Africa, [5] the cluster is easily visible to the unaided eye, and is one of the nearest star clusters, centred about 149 parsecs (486 light-years) away from Earth.

IC 2602 is a prominent open cluster in the southern constellation of Carina that was discovered by Abbe Lacaille in 1751 from South Africa. It contains about 60 stars spread across 50 arc minutes and is easily visible to the naked eye.

The open cluster IC 2602 is located in the constellation Carina near the 2.7 mag bright star θ Carinae. Unfortunately it is not visible from Europe. On 28 February it in opposition with the Sun and is therefore highest in the sky at local midnight.
