2019年1月20日 · ICG 7000 was the very first SD45 built by EMD in December 1965 as EMDX 4351, one of four total SD45 Demonstrators. All four demo units were built with the L-shaped windows which made it and the other three easily identifiable.

SD45 – The below photo denotes the road number 7000 of the ICG – The only SD45 that they owned. It is somewhat unique in that it had a larger inertial air intake on the engineer’s side and has the “L” shaped windshield on the engineer’s side.

When built in December 1965, it was the very first SD45. A very special SD45 indeed! In the attached photograph, we see the #7000 in its ICG days (along with GM&O SD40’s #906 and 913) in Council Bluffs, IA on 9/8/83.

Illinois Central Gulf - SD45 #7000. The real unit was purchased by Illinois Central in 1971 from EMD while I have no photos reports in old Extra 2200 south magazine seem to suggest it ran around renumbered to #7000 in EMD paint for about 3 months. It was painted into Illinois Central orange & white in May-1971 at Paduach, KY shops.

It was almost impossible to get an "uncooupled" shot of this engine. It did not have ATS and so couldn't lead in a lot of places on the ICG. The IC + GM&O merger saw several F3A / F7A locos conveyed to the new ICG and assigned a 1600 series number, but only 1610, 1615 and 1620 had them applied. They were also the only F-units to receive the full orange & white treatment.
