Players take on the role of David Jones, an experienced spy who is a key member of the international agency I.G.I. (Institute for Geotactical Intelligence). The game offers a variety of missions that include: infiltrating enemy bases, rescuing hostages, obtaining important documents and eliminating targets.

IGI-2 includes an online multiplayer mode that can be likened to Counter-Strike, but without the crowded servers and juvenile players. Each side is given objectives that they must complete while simultaneously defending their base from the other team.
