What does the 2023 IMO GHG Strategy say? The 2023 IMO GHG Strategy represents a framework for Member States, setting out the future vision for international shipping, the levels of ambition to reduce GHG emissions and guiding principles; and includes candidate mid- and long-term further measures with possible timelines and their impacts on States.
IMO GHG studies
To support evidence-based decision making on addressing GHG emissions from international shipping, IMO has since 2000 commissioned studies to estimate greenhouse gas emissions from the sector and project possible developments.
Initial IMO GHG Strategy
In 2018, IMO adopted an initial strategy on the reduction of GHG emissions from ships, setting out a vision which confirms IMO’s commitment to reducing GHG emissions from international shipping and to phasing them out as soon as possible.
IMO remains committed to reducing GHG emissions from international shipping and, as a matter of urgency, aims to phase them out as soon as possible, while promoting, in the context of this Strategy, a just and equitable transition.
