Then I started reading about the IRF520N, and realised that the 3 V supplied from 2 AA batteries to the Atmega328P is probably not enough to operate the misfot.

Note that using a 100V MOSFET for a 12V circuit is a poor choice - performance goes down with increasing voltage for MOSFETs, which explains the very high on-resistance of the the IRF520 (its also an ancient device, pretty much as obsolete as they come for a MOSFET).

Beim Modul mit dem werksseitigen IRF520N funktioniert es problemlos. Angesteuert wird mit einem ESP32 und man sieht beim IRF520N, wenn man den Mosfet überbrückt das Licht noch etwas heller werden.
