My current Class D Audio, IRS2092-based, SDS-258 amp sounds better. It's as highly resolved & transparent but the mid-range is a bit more full-bodied -- however I doubt anybody would mistake it for a SET or even a push-pull EL34 or KT88. As for class D sounding "off", various reviewers including RGA have said this.

I don't doubt the TPA3116 represents an amazing value. Speaking personally, for the effort you put into it, I would have gone for a higher powered Tripath- or IRS2092-based amp: more expensive but all 'round better.
