The International Science Council (ISC) was created in 2018 from the merger of the International Council for Science, which was founded in 1931, and the International Social Science Council, founded in 1952. The ISC’s first General Assembly was held in Paris, France in July 2018.

The ISC was formed with its inaugural general assembly on 4 July 2018 by the merger of the former International Council for Science (ICSU) and the International Social Science Council (ISSC), making it one of the largest organisations of this type.
