The iliotibial band (ITB) is a thick band of fascia formed proximally at the hip by the fascia of the gluteus maximus, gluteus medius and tensor fasciae latae muscles. Its main functions are pelvic stabilisation and posture control.

The origin of the IT band is the iliac crest, which is the upper margin of the hip bone. Specifically, it originates at the anterolateral iliac tubercle on the external lip of the iliac crest. This is a small bony projection located at the junction of the anterior and lateral borders of the iliac crest.
