SMIP can be taken as an official 1.5-credit course or as an extracurricular opportunity. In either case, members will have access to lectures on modern portfolio theory, valuation, and performance attribution. Associated assignments will also be assigned to SMIP's sector teams to facilitate experiential learning.

The Student Managed Investment Portfolio (SMIP) will give you the opportunity to have real financial impact. You and your classmates will work together to help manage real assets. You’ll have oversight and guidance from the Foundation for IUP, and you’ll come away with hands-on experience using real money.

The Student Managed Investment Portfolio project affords students real money-fronted by the Foundation of IUP-for real investing. The SMIP membership, consisting of Finance, Accounting, and Economics majors, is chosen by the faculty and has a minimum grade-point average of 3.0.

SMIP is a combined class and organization experience for students. Students manage university assets of more than 1.2 million dollars in US Equities. This organization is an opportunity to improve students’ skill sets applicable to financial services or a multitude of business fields.
