In June 1979, the Izhevsk Mechanical Plant began mass producing the IZh-38, a spring piston air rifle designed by German Protopopov. The new design was based on the earlier IZh-22 rifle. The list of IZh-38's improvements over its predecessor included updated iron sights, a forged barrel with 12 grooves, and a more readily producible receiver.

2021年12月18日 · When I opened Gun A it had a solid leather piston seal and good spring. Gun B had a scragged spring and a folded piece of leather for a piston seal. I rebuilt Gun A with a 25mm plastic piston seal and a gas spring purchased from Izhevsk Russia. Gun B received the leather piston seal and spring from gun A. Both breach seals were replaced.
