IEW is a unique approach to teaching writing. Students begin by analyzing and imitating good writing with the end goal of developing the skills to write their own original compositions. IEW uses two core methods – structure (organizational skills) and style (artistic flair).

The first thing that students learn in IEW, and what can be argued is the most fundamental part of the IEW process, is developing Key Word Outlines (KWOs). Essentially, this involves teaching students to read or otherwise parse information and then jot down its key points as notes, building an outline of what they have read.

TWTM outlining is standard multi-level outlining. Standard outlining uses phrases or sentences instead of just key words.

Unit 1: Key word outlines will be taught using a level A source text. Unit 2: Building on the creation of the key word outline (KWO) learners will write a paraphrase from their outlines. Unit 3: The story sequence chart is introduced to plan a retelling of a simple fable. KWOs will be created from the fable by answering questions about the story.
