Pictured here is the "bema" or judgment seat from ancient Corinth. The city's judges would have sat here to make judgments on cases brought before them. Saint Paul might have been brought here when he was accused of "inducing people to worship God contrary to the law" (Acts 18:13).

A bema is an elevated platform used as an orator's podium. The term can refer to the raised area in a sanctuary. In Jewish synagogues, where it is used for Torah reading during services, the term used is bima or bimah.

"Bema" (judgment-seat) - An elevated platform at the center of the line of shops dividing the agora, it stood at a point highly visible to the crowds gathered there. Originally covered with white and blue marble, it had benches on the back and part way on the sides.
