The Intel 4001 chip was introduced in 1971 as part of the Intel 4000 family; a fully decoded static Random Access Memory chip, fabricated with P-channel silicon gate MOS technology. It is a 2048-bit metal mask programmable ROM providing custom microprogramming capability for the MCS-4 micro computer set. It is organised as 256 x 8-bit words.

The Intel 4004, released by the Intel Corporation in 1971, was the first commercially produced microprocessor and the first in a long line of Intel central processing units (CPUs). Priced at US$ 60 (equivalent to $466 in 2024), it marked a breakthrough in computing by condensing an entire 4-bit CPU onto a single chip.

The 4001 performs two basic and distinct functions. As a ROM it stores 256 x 8 words of program or data tables; as a vehicle of communication with peripheral devices it is provided with 4 1/O pins and associated control logic to perform input and output operations. The 4001 is a PMOS device, compatible with all other MCS-40TM devices.
