Improve effective communication. Improve the safety of medications. Ensure safe surgery. Reduce the risk of health care-associated infections.

IPSG.1: The hospital develops and implements a process to improve accuracy of patient identifications. The standards provide some very specific examples for when two patient identifiers are required. Repeat it back to the person giving the order. Ask the person to write it in the patient medical record the next time she is in the department.
