Captain Davies : Now men, stay sober! Any drinkin' to be done, I'll do it myself. Dr. Moreau : I can't have this man. I can't have him aboard. Captain Davies : Well, throw him overboard. That's what I did.

After his ship goes down, Edward Parker is rescued at sea. Parker gets into a fight with Captain Davies of the Apia and the Captain tosses him overboard while making a delivery to the tiny tropical island of Dr. Moreau. Parker discovers that Moreau has good reason to be so secretive on his lonely island.

The captain throws Parker onto Moreau's boat. Dr. Moreau (Charles Laughton) takes Parker to his house, using his whip to scare away the man-like creatures in the jungle. Moreau tells Lota (Kathleen Burke) not to speak of him or the house of pain and takes her to Parker.
