Italian prunes can be kept as dwarf trees around 10-12 feet (3-3.5 m.) through careful pruning, a very manageable size. They are self-fertile, winter hardy, and the luscious fruit can be eaten fresh, dried, or canned.

Italian plum trees (Prunus domestica ‘Italian Prune’) are also referred to as the Fellenberg European plum after the Swiss agronomist P. E. von Fellenberg imported the fruit to Germany from Lombardy, Italy in 1800. The Italian plum tree has a drooping, spreading canopy that is thick with elliptical medium- to dark-green leaves with toothed edges.

Grandpa's Choice™ Italian Prune is often used for drying. It ripens in mid-season, just ahead of Stanley time, and is a beautiful dark purple, with sweet, firm yellow flesh. It is more suited for western areas than Stanley, but will grow well in the east to. Italian Prune is also known as Fellenberg, and has always been popular.
