The Macchi M.C. 72 is an experimental floatplane designed and built by the Italian aircraft company Macchi Aeronautica. The M.C. 72 held the world speed record for all aircraft for five years. In 1933 and 1934 it set world speed records for piston engine-powered seaplanes; the latter still stands.

2018年10月23日 · In 1935 Italy hosted an airshow in Milan in which 17 Italian aviation firms, four French, four German, one Polish and one from the United States exhibited their latest products. Prominent among those displayed by Macchi was the record-breaking—and sole surviving—M.C.72. The Schneider Trophy Race did much to boost speed in aviation.

On October 23, 1934, Francesco Agello and the Macchi Castoldi M.C. 72 achieved the absolute world speed record for a piston-powered seaplane. the Italian-built seaplane set a world record speed for internal combustion-powered seaplanes which still stands to this day.

2024年10月23日 · Five Macchi M.C.72 float planes had been built for the 1931 Schneider Trophy race, but problems with the Fiat AS.6 engine, which was essentially two AS.5 V-12s assembled back-to-back, prevented them from competing. Four test pilots, including Francesco Agello, had been selected to fly the airplanes for speed record attempts.
