Stirling in 1941, Stela 5 is composed of volcanic andesite and weighs around one-and-a-half tons. [4] . Stela 5 presents the most complex imagery of all the stelae at Izapa. [5] .

Stela 5 is recognized as the most complex stela, bearing the most important message. Some brief interpretations give an indication of the difficulty of determining its message. Keeler, writing on surviving tree of life customs, drew a reconstruction of the scene and gave the following interpretation of Stela 5 (see Figure 1):
