A 130A/2220 cone kit in a D130 frame will not make a 130A. As the OP noted, one reason that the early systems sometimes have D130 as woofers is that JBL (as did EV) used to market the "building block" idea of starting with an extended range driver and then adding a crossover and a tweeter or horn when the budget allowed.

The 130A used exactly the same cone as the D130. I think JBL decided my "goop" treatment of the "F" series was a good idea for all these cones. It reduced surrounds cracking from drying out.

Except--making a 130a out of a D130 to reproduce recorded music--that would be a problem because fidelity would be compromised, but going the other way, i.e. coning a 130a frame with a D130 kit to play your guitar through, if you like the way it sounds, I don't see where there's a problem. But don't wreck a good 130a to do it.

They have a midrange that is simply gorgeous and easy to listen to.The midrange and aesthetics actually ousted the 4430s from my living room.
