James Buchanan became the 15th President of the United States in 1857. Since Buchanan never married, Harriet acted as first lady. It is said that she filled the White House with gaiety and flowers, guided its social life with enthusiasm and discretion, and had a captivating mixture of spontaneity and poise.

Buchanan's Birthplace State Park was created from land donated to the state by Harriet Lane in honor of her uncle, the 15th President of the United States, James Buchanan. Recreation facilities are limited. There are two pavilions and a number of picnic tables. Drinking water and two restrooms are located near the picnic area.

Buchanan’s Birthplace State Park offers environmental education and recreation programs from April through October. Through guided walks and hands-on activities, visitors gain appreciation and awareness toward the natural and historical resources.

Located near Cove Gap in Franklin County, this 18 acre park has 2 picnic pavilions and a few picnic tables, but the dominant feature is the 31 foot-tall pyramid that marks the spot where James Buchanan’s early childhood cabin once stood.

This quiet little park, with a partly one lane access road, has a stone pyramid memorializing Buchanan's birthplace. The actual cabin has since been move to Mercersburg. While there isn't a ton to see or do, its a beautiful little spot, and a pretty stream runs through it.
