Two events are recorded concerning Jesus’ youth, however. One is a general comment telling us that after Mary and Joseph returned from Egypt (where they had fled to avoid King Herod’s attempts to murder the young child), they settled in Nazareth, where Jesus worked alongside Joseph as a carpenter (see Mark 6:3).

The Bible’s promise is clear: “If you confess with your mouth, ‘Jesus is Lord,’ and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved” (Romans 10:9). Do you remember the way Jesus welcomed children who wanted to come to Him? On one occasion, His disciples tried to hold them back.

(You can find them in Mark 10:15.) One of the main reasons people reject Jesus is pride; they believe they don’t need Him and can make it through life on their own. But only when we renounce our pride and come to Him with the humility and trust of a child can we be saved. Don’t let your pride, or anything else, keep you from Christ.

Q: There’s a new movement stirring some debate claiming that God wants people who love Jesus to remain as little children. This is contrary to Scripture and I believe this group is misinterpreting the story of Jesus speaking of having the faith of a child. Preachers are not speaking out against this, and I wonder why.

And Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men” (Luke 2:51-52). Never forget that Jesus was God in human flesh, from the moment of His miraculous conception. And because He was God as well as man, He was able to be the one final sacrifice for our sins.

They added, “We have seen His star in the east and have come to worship him” (Matthew 2:2, NKJV). When word of this reached King Herod, he sent for them and urged them to find the child, so he could worship him, too. But Herod was lying. His real goal was to destroy the child, fearing (illogically) that in time Jesus would take over his throne.

Beyond this, it only says that “Jesus grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and man” (Luke 2:52). Never forget: Although Jesus was born and grew up like any other child, He was more than just another human being. He also was the divine Son of God, sent from heaven to save us from our sins.

Let him know that someone else also loves him—and that “someone” is God, who made him. Teach him about Jesus, and how He gave His life for us. In addition, seek other ways to make Christ real to your son. Recently I heard of one autistic child who had learned a number of hymns. Another was able to memorize passages from the Bible.
