2024年1月21日 · Their first shopping cart was a metal frame that held two wire baskets. Since they were inspired by the folding chair, Goldman called his carts "folding basket carriers". Another mechanic, Arthur Kosted, developed a method to mass-produce the carts by inventing an assembly line capable of forming and welding the wire.

The only known use of the noun Jew cart is in the 1840s. OED's only evidence for Jew cart is from 1840, in the writing of Frederick Marryat, naval officer and novelist.

Sylvan Goldman (1898-1984), owner of the Humpty Dumpty supermarket in Oklahoma City, introduced the first shopping cart on this date in 1937. Goldman built it with the assistance of a mechanic, Fred Young, based on a folding chair design, with wheels on the bottom of the chair legs and the seat replaced by two stacked metal baskets.
