2020年1月6日 · Jiao are a kind of wine-drinking vessel, popular for only a brief period at the end of the Shang and the early Zhou. This vessel has a lid, with a half-ring-shaped knob at its apex. The vessel's mouth is olive shaped, with a deep body, a round base, and three pyramid feet.

This elaborate set of wine vessels provides an idea of the splendor of Shang and early Zhou ritual ceremonies. The set is said to have come from a tomb uncovered in 1901; shortly thereafter, it entered the collection of Duan Fang, a senior Manchu official and one of the preeminent antiquarians of the late Qing period.

Jiao dou was a warming vessel which could possibly be used as a wine container. Different materials, including bronze, iron, pottery, and porcelain, were used to make Jiao dou in various shapes and with different decorations.

In addition to the present vessel, only two other Shi jiao are known, both of which were excavated from the Qianzhangda tombs in Tengzhou county, Shandong province, published in The Institute of Archaeology, Chinese Academy of Social Sciences, Tengzhou qianzhangda mudi [Qianzhangda tombs in Tengzhou], Beijing, 2005, pp 259 and 262.
